Sarah Willis & The Sarahbanda: »Cuban Christmas« at Philharmonie Berlin
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Grosser Saal
About the Event
The daughter of an Australian foreign correspondent and a dance critic, Sarah Willis grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow, and Surrey in the UK. At the age of 14, she discovered the French horn at school, an instrument that would shape her life. In 1991, at the age of 23, she became the first Western musician to join the Staatskapelle Berlin. And in 2001, Willis became the first brass player in the history of the Berlin Philharmonic, where she still performs today. But that's not all: her exuberant temperament and irrepressible passion have led her to solo projects all over the world.
The horn player and enthusiastic salsa dancer has developed a very special love for Cuba. The sensational success of her “Mozart y Mambo” project gave rise to “Sarahbanda,” with which she explores the captivating Cuban dance rhythms—with some of Cuba's most talented musicians and, of course, her French horn. “Cuban Christmas” combines Christmas classics and works by Bach and Tchaikovsky with rousing Cuban grooves in new arrangements.
