Whether one ultimately returns to the beginning, to Franz Schubert's “Frühlingsglaube” (Spring Faith) with Ludwig Uhland's verses, which sound hopeful again and again ('Now, poor heart, forget your torment! // Now everything, everything must change“), find yourself in Mahler's songs, which oscillate between melancholic premonitions of happiness and deep darkness, or engage with Shostakovich's Michelangelo cycle and last things just before Christmas, the festival of light, hope, and ”nevertheless' – the resonance space is wide‐ranging on this concert evening.
