Philharmonischer Chor Berlin & Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt Oder: »Elias« at Philharmonie Berlin
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Grosser Saal
About the Event
Jörg‐Peter Weigle has shaped the artistic direction of the Berlin Philharmonic Choir for over two decades. At the start of the 2025/26 season, the young choir conductor Florian Benfer from Sweden – the Mecca of choral music – will take over the reins. In March, the Berlin Philharmonic Choir, conducted by guest conductor Gregor Meyer, will perform Mendelssohn's gripping and dramatic oratorio “Elijah” together with the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt and renowned soloists.
“In Elijah, I had imagined a true prophet through and through, the kind we could use again today: strong, zealous, even evil, angry, and gloomy, in contrast to the court rabble and the common rabble, and in contrast to almost the entire world, yet carried as if on angel wings,” said the composer about his masterpiece. The Old Testament biblical quotations cast in sound musically trace the prophetic journey of Elijah – the development of an individual in his interaction with the community, the people of Israel.
