Mischa Maisky — “Bach: The Cello Suites I” at Philharmonie Berlin
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Kammermusiksaal
About the Event
Bach's cello suites are a world unto themselves, timeless masterpieces full of musical depth, technical challenge, and haunting emotion. Cellist Mischa Maisky, renowned for his passionate interpretations and intense musical expressiveness, will perform all six suites over two evenings.
It was not until two centuries after they were written that 13‐year‐old Pablo Casals discovered Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suites at a second‐hand shop – it took another 35 years before his recording of the suites set new standards in discography.
Cello legend Mischa Maisky set new standards once again with his award‐winning interpretation. The Lithuanian‐born musician fell in love with the works when his brother gave him a copy of the sheet music in 1959. “Work on it as much as you can, your whole life, to prove yourself worthy of this great music,” he wrote on the title page. Known for his passionate interpretations and intense musical expressiveness, Maisky will perform all six suites over two evenings.
