About the Event
The Unfinished Ninth is Anton Bruckner’s final work. Until his death in 1896, he worked on the finale of this symphony, which continues the weighty tradition of its eight predecessors. He fervently hoped to be able to finish composing the final movement and even spoke of it to his doctor. Because his apartment was sealed too late after his death, all sorts of authorized and unauthorized individuals immediately rushed to get their hands on the existing manuscript pages. But it had finally become clear to its creator that his strength and time would not be sufficient to complete it. He therefore stipulated that his “Te Deum,” completed twelve years earlier, should be performed in place of the fourth movement. Often, however, the symphony is simply performed in its unfinished state. It is framed by two short, contemporary works by Arvo Pärt and Periklis Koukos that meditatively reflect the atmosphere of Good Friday.
