About the Event
“Fletch” is the English term for the feather at the end of an arrow. The sound of the word is related to the fundamental tone of Rebecca Saunders' string quartet of the same name. Something is thrown into the air and made to fly. It is the physical movement of the bow that catapults the sound into the room. The sound becomes tangible and visible in Daniela Terranova's “Sentire con tatto” through the gestures of the performers, who transform their four string instruments from a seventeenth‐century still life into a contemporary vitality and new meaning.
Inhaling and exhaling are two basic processes of life. Beat Furrer's “Ira‐Arca” refers to a structural principle in Inca music that complements an inhaling melody with an exhaling one. With “Asche” (Ashes), Mark Andre emphasizes the disappearance and transformation of the form of existence, drawing on the New Testament. Sound situations and structures evaporate and are transformed by the composer into a different presence.
In contrast, Ying Wang's “Speed – Tesla vs. Hermes” from the series “American Gods” is dedicated to American idols and their anchoring in our everyday lives. The prevailing concept in Leonid Hrabovsky's “Trio” is sonorism, in which musical sound becomes an autonomous substance. However, he contrasts this focus on sound with a classical four‐movement form, which keeps the work in a surprising balance.
