About the Event

The timeless allure of Giacomo Puccini's opera, capturing the vibrant lives of Parisian bohemians, is vividly presented in Götz Friedrich's iconic 1988 production.

In a chilling Paris attic on Christmas Day, the writer Rodolfo and painter Marcello struggle to create amidst hunger and a cold stove, with no money for rent. Colline, the philosopher, attempts to pawn his books but returns unsuccessful. In contrast, Schaunard, the musician, arrives with provisions: food, firewood, cigars, and cash. The group heads to Café Momus, although Rodolfo stays behind to work. He encounters a neighbor needing a light, who faints and loses her key. Rodolfo falls for Mimì, an embroiderer, battling terminal tuberculosis. Two months pass, and Rodolfo, unable to witness her decline in his impoverished home, leaves her. After six months, Musetta, Marcello's former lover, brings the ailing Mimì back. Musetta sells her earrings for medicine, Colline offers his coat. Mimì feels grateful and content. Rodolfo thinks she is resting peacefully, but Mimì has passed away. Puccini's mastery of musical color, evident in EDGAR [1889] and MANON LESCAUT, reached new heights in LA BOHÈME, which fused narrative and music, earning Claude Debussy's acclaim: 'I know of no one who has described the Paris of that time as well as Puccini in LA BOHÈME.' Puccini's impressionistic techniques merge deep emotion with vivid audio imagery, enhancing the opera's enchanting local color from the start. Scenes like Rodolfo and Marcello burning a manuscript or reviving fainted Mimì, the choir's contrast with the stage orchestra at a military parade, and the third scene's depiction of a cold morning using minimal, precise musical elements, all contribute to the production's spellbinding effect.
