About the Event

With the dominance of the gods at its height at the end of THE RHINEGOLD and the gods settling in the castle of Valhalla, challenges arise in THE VALKYRIE. The mortals are driven by power, mistrust and materialism dominate, and the gods are preoccupied with maintaining old rules rather than questioning their purpose. Siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde face death because their unique love has no place in society. Brünnhilde, a Valkyrie, is captivated by them and bravely defies her father Wotan’s verdict by protecting the pair. In THE VALKYRIE, Wagner clearly shows whose side he is on: in the intense love scene between Siegmund and Sieglinde, where the primal force of love overcomes societal norms, and in Brünnhilde’s character development, initially driven by instinctive compassion, which evolves into conscious action as a stand against inhumanity and injustice.
