Der Ring des Nibelungen – Das Rheingold
Berlin, Deutsche Oper Berlin — Main stage
About the Event
Richard Wagner envisioned RHEINGOLD as a 'pre‐evening' to his grand stage play DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, intentionally echoing the prologues of Baroque operas. In these narratives, deities orchestrate the events that determine human destinies. Like Monteverdi's ancient gods, Wagner's northern deities are representations of human impulses. In the two and a half hours of RHEINGOLD, every emotion, urge, and thought intrinsic to human life unfolds. It begins with the naïve games of the Rheinmaidens, from whom the Nibelung Alberich seizes the gold, touches upon the dwarf's insatiable lust for power and Loge's scornful nihilism, and culminates in Wotan, the father of the gods, striving to establish permanence with his creation of Valhalla. The gold itself stands as a silent protagonist, a luminous beacon of allure that serves as a moral touchstone dividing gods and humans into good and evil.
DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN, with its ambition to delineate the world across time, presents the ultimate test for opera directors. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Stefan Herheim embraces the challenge of adapting Wagner's mindset for the 21st century. The acclaimed Norwegian director, a recipient of multiple awards, ranks among the most influential directors of our era. His works often highlight the ideological and historical contexts of operas. This distinctive approach marked his celebrated PARSIFAL in Bayreuth and aptly qualifies him for a modern interpretation of RING.
