About the Event
On the last day of 1985, some former students of the Freiburg University of Music decided to found an ensemble dedicated entirely to historically informed performance practice: the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. This spontaneous idea developed into a unique musical success story that was rewarded with numerous prizes. “Fresh impulses, highly virtuosic, playful lightness, stylish ornamentation, improvisational elements and a remarkable sense of dialog,” is how the jury of the International Classic Music Award recently explained its decision. Concertmaster Cecilia Bernardini, “charismatic captain and sensitive dialog partner” (SWR Kultur), alternates with founder Gottfried von der Goltz in leading the orchestra from the concertmaster's podium. Renowned artists regularly work with the ensemble.
During Passiontide, just two weeks before Easter, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra presents a special concert: Bach's St. John Passion. The work is considered a masterpiece of sacred music literature and is characterized by its dramatic and emotional music.
