Jean‐Guihen Queyras, cello
Barcelona, Palau de la Música Catalana — Concert Hall
About the Event
Thirteen years after performing Bach’s six Cello Suites at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Jean‐Guihen Queyras returns to this formidable tour de force. He follows a new recording of the complete cycle with a new instrument: the 1707 “Kaiser” Stradivarius, crafted in Cremona. Six works in succession, one cello and a performer who has played them hundreds of times worldwide: a rare chance to hear Queyras revisit one of the great landmarks of the cello repertoire.
Bach did not write these Suites as concert works for many years, they were seen chiefly as studies. Pau Casals, after discovering them as a teenager, played a vital role in placing them at the centre of the cello repertoire. More than three centuries after their composition, Queyras brings the complete cycle back to the Palau, in a season also marking the 150th anniversary of Pau Casals’s birth.
