About the Event

Dive into the emotional world of opera this season with 'Werther' at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

In 1774, The Sorrows of Young Werther emerged — a novel with autobiographical elements by the then‐unknown 25‐year‐old German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It swiftly became a cornerstone of universal literature. This work belongs to the Romantic period and exemplifies the Sturm und Drang movement. An epistolary narrative unfolds through Werther, a passionate young man who writes letters to his friend Wilhelm, describing his obsessive love for Charlotte, who opts to marry another man due to a promise made to her dying mother.

Ironically, the novel's success sparked a significant social issue. In January 1775, a wave of love suicides, inspired by the romantic hero, began. These cases persisted for several years, growing into a phenomenon that was thoroughly studied and spread across Europe. Captivated by the plot's intense passion, Massenet started setting it to music in 1885.
