Gran Teatre del Liceu: Le nozze di Figaro
Barcelona, Gran Teatre del Liceu — Sala Principal
About the Event
Delight in the wit of Mozart's brilliance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with the presentation of The Marriage of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro).
Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's librettist for his remarkable Trilogy (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte), led a life that reads like fiction: a wanderer, director of the New Italian Theatre at the Viennese court, an Italian professor in London, and a friend of Casanova (who deeply influenced his depiction of Don Giovanni), he ultimately became a professor at Columbia University in New York, where he passed away.
Conversely, Beaumarchais brings a vibrant personality and, like Da Ponte, had a life filled with adventures: he was a watchmaker, inventor, playwright, piano teacher to Louis XV's daughters, spy, diplomat, editor, horticulturist, and revolutionary. Beaumarchais faced a long battle to publish Figaro or La folle journée, as censorship and royal opposition due to its critical view of the ruling class's arrogance impeded him—the aristocracy poised on the verge of the French Revolution. The play dramatically portrays the class conflict between master and servant, advocating for the moral superiority of common society while sparking thoughts of rebellion.
