About the Event
Look forward to the Maat Saxophone Quartet, which will perform BLACKBIRD, a program that honors female composers who broke musical boundaries. It includes works by Hildegard von Bingen, Lili Boulanger, Henriette Bosmans, and Aleksandra Vrebalov. The program is complemented by George Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue,” an iconic work that combines jazz and classical music and is itself an example of musical boundary‐breaking. Nina Simone's version of Gershwin's “Porgy, I's your woman now” will also be performed, honoring Simone's role in the civil rights movement. The concert concludes with Paul McCartney's “Blackbird,” inspired by the struggle for equality.
