About the Event

Even though it begins with “Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust” (Hiking is the miller’s delight), Schubert’s cycle “Die schöne Müllerin” (The Beautiful Miller Girl) is not a collection of harmless folk songs. Instead, we have here perhaps the most beautiful early Romantic opera, albeit in miniature format. A man is destroyed by an unhappy love. The version in the octet instrumentation invented by Schubert for string quartet, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, and horn paints the existential drama in stronger colors.

With surtitles in German and English.

Artists

Tenor: Klaus Florian Vogt

German tenor Klaus Florian Vogt ranks as one his generation’s preeminent interpreters of Richard Wagner’s great operatic works. Born in Schleswig‐Holstein, Vogt started his career as a horn player with the Hamburg Philharmonic before turning to his true passion: the human voice. Following a stint at the Lübeck Academy of Music and the Landestheater in Flensburg, he moved to Dresden where he promptly landed a succession of parts that established his reputation. With an impressive range, Vogt has played roles in works by composers as diverse as Wagner, Mozart, Strauss, and Mahler.
