About the Event

Gustav Mahler tiptoed around it like a cat around poisoned milk. The Ninth? Other composers have died after writing a Ninth Symphony! The knowledge that the number nine marks a magical threshold shapes the sonic character of Mahler’s symphony. It opens in an optimistic D major rather than the D minor of his colleagues Beethoven and Bruckner. Klaus Mäkelä, who made a deep impression with Mahler’s Fifth at the 2026 Easter Festival, will conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s last completed symphony.
