About the Event
As Clara and Robert Schumann struggled to secure their future together, they found solace in an opera couple: Florestan and Leonore from *Fidelio*. Now, Joana Mallwitz and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra will open the 2027 Easter Festival with this masterpiece. Beethoven’s supremely stirring, symphonic opera music celebrates heroes who combine their desire for personal happiness with that for universal freedom. Unlike usual, here a heroine saves her hero: in this production, it is Vera‐Lotte Boecker, named “Singer of the Year 2022” in a critics’ poll conducted by the trade journal “Opernwelt.” The role of Florestan is sung by Sean Panikkar, a tenor who is extremely popular in the United States. Krzysztof Warlikowski, the director of the production, has already been awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his life’s work.
