Music is our memory. Shostakovich’s ‘Babi Yar’ Symphony and Schoenberg’s vivid portrayal of a Warsaw ghetto raid serve as poignant reminders of World War II's horrors. In these gripping compositions, the orchestra shares the stage with the male choir of Laurens Symfonisch and the haunting voice of Alexander Roslavets. While stone monuments decay, music remains eternal, offering a lasting link to history, as highlighted by award‐winning critic and cultural historian Jeremy Eichler in his acclaimed book, Time’s Echo.
Weinberg’s Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra
Principal cellist Gregor Horsch excels in Mieczysław Weinberg’s bittersweet Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra, infused with klezmer melancholy and Polish folk melodies. A true ‘survivor from Warsaw,’ the Polish‐Jewish composer fled to the Soviet Union to evade the Nazis. There, he faced antisemitism but forged a lasting friendship with Dmitry Shostakovich.
