Klaus Mäkelä Conducts Mahler
As the chief conductor designate, Klaus Mäkelä continues his exploration of Mahler with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Gustav Mahler’s Seventh Symphony takes listeners through an emotional cleansing journey alongside the composer. It begins with a hesitant dance between opposing emotions, followed by mysterious nocturnal visions in the middle, and ultimately climaxes in a victorious triumph. Mahler employs abundant brass and percussion to create a grand finale akin to a dazzling fireworks display.
Concertgebouw Orchestra
Gustav Mahler himself conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra for its 1909 Dutch debut. 'I feel that I have found a second musical fatherland in Amsterdam,’ he wrote to his friend Willem Mengelberg. The Concertgebouw's renowned chief conductor dedicated himself to familiarizing Dutch audiences with Mahler's expansive symphonies. His devotion impressed Alma Mahler so much that she gifted the orchestra the imposing score of the Seventh Symphony after Mahler’s passing in 1911. Initially baffling to critics and audiences, the whimsical Seventh eventually became a listener favorite.
