About the Event
Dreams and Night revolves around the beautiful choral arrangement of Träume, born of the intense love affair between writer Mathilde Wesendonck and composer Richard Wagner. Exiled from Germany in 1849 because of his political activities, Wagner and his wife found refuge with Mathilde and Otto Wesendonck in Zurich in 1852. The Wesendoncks supported Wagner financially and offered him a cottage on their estate in 1857. There, inspired by Schopenhauer's philosophy of music as a direct expression of the essence of the world — the blind, impulsive will — Wagner began work on Tristan und Isolde. Mathilde became his muse and mistress, reflecting their shared passion in Träume.
Music as impulsive will is enhanced by the mysticism of the night. This program reveals not only that intensity, but also reflection, strength, hope and comfort. This evening combines beloved classics, such as Rheinberger's Abendlied and Brahms' Nachtwache II, with surprising discoveries. You will hear Samuel Coleridge‐Taylor's dramatic Sea‐Drift, the 'African Mahler,' and Ešenvalds' enchanting The New Moon, enriched with nine singing crystal glasses. A work by Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg (1986), in which a solo quartet alternates with the large choir, will also be heard. Of the twelve composers, eight are still alive and kicking. Get carried away in a program that breaks the daily grind and immerses you in a dream full of wonder and magic.
