Couleur Vocale: Cappella Sacelli
Amsterdam, De Waalse Kerk
About the Event
Cappella Sacelli brings music from 16th century Amsterdam back to life. The four soloists of the men's ensemble sing from an extraordinary piece of historical heritage: the magnificent manuscript, the Occo Codex, a treasure trove of polyphony. And a gift from the merchant and patron, Pompeius Occo, especially for the Holy City. The chapel that once stood between Rokin and Kalverstraat and was the centerpiece of the then‐famous pilgrimage site of Amsterdam. As once was the case between the vaults, the serene and crystal‐clear music of Josquin des Prez, Jean Mouton, Pierre de la Rue and other masters now resounds again. Now sung by Andrew Hallock (countertenor), Dierick Aartsen (tenor), Jeroen Spitteler (baritone) and Jonty Coy (bass).
Cappella Sacelli was founded in 2021. This professional male quartet consists of singers with extensive experience in early music and singing from historical manuscripts and original mensural notation. The ensemble's name is derived from the “Heilige Stede,” the chapel that for centuries was the center of devotion surrounding the Miracle of Amsterdam. In the Occo Codex, this place is called Sacellum, 'the little chapel. The ensemble is conducted by Jeroen Spitteler and is an initiative of Stichting Hermes.
