About the Event

The fifth edition of Concertgebouworkest Young is under the direction of in‐demand conductor Elim Chan. Musical talents aged 14 to 17 from all over Europe will play Shostakovich's masterful Fifth Symphony and Elgar's Cello Concerto with verve. Soloist is award‐winning cellist Julia Hagen.

Heroic symphony by Shostakovich
The Concertgebouw Orchestra Young is an international youth orchestra for young people who deserve a helping hand. Every other year, the young talents from all corners of Europe gather in the Netherlands and study a challenging program with various coaches and musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The successful and Amsterdam‐based conductor Elim Chan leads the fifth edition. As a lover of the great Russian repertoire, Shostakovich's overwhelming Fifth Symphony is in good hands with her.

Elgar's popular Cello Concerto with Julia Hagen
Last year Julia Hagen won the prestigious UBS Young Artist Award, after which she performed with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Lucerne Festival. The Times praised the “character and accuracy” of Hagen's playing, while Bachtrack wrote of her “natural charisma and completely natural way of handling her cello, which she treats as a part of her own body. She returns to The Concertgebouw with Elgar's Cello Concerto, one of the finest cello concertos ever written.
