Nikola Meeuwsen became world famous overnight when he won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition 2025 on June 1. This year he was not only the youngest finalist, but also the very first Dutchman to win this famous competition since its inception in 1937. We are therefore particularly honored to feature him in this season's Bösendorfer Piano Series. Nikola has been on stage with us before, in 2023, and made a great impression then. This evening, in addition to works by Prokofiev, Schumann and Mozart, he will play Shostakovich's Second Piano Sonata. In this 1943 sonata, Shostakovich returns to the solo piano repertoire, ten years after his famous preludes and fugues. Originating in the dark years of World War II, during a difficult evacuation period with his family, the piece is an intimate and deeply personal testimony. Dedicated to his dear teacher and friend Leonid Nikolayev, the sonata exudes a special melancholy and strength that deeply impresses the listener.
