Hannes Minnaar opens the 7th edition of the Bösendorfer Piano Series with works by Bach and Shostakovich. What connects these two composers? Bach wrote twenty‐four preludes and fugues, one in each key, to give an overview of the musical characters and possibilities of the well‐voiced keyboard instrument. This is the idea behind his monumental work Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. More than two centuries later, in 1950, this work inspired Dmitri Shostakovich to create a version of his own: following in Bach's footsteps, he also composed a series of twenty‐four preludes and fugues, but in his very own style. 225 years after Bach's death and 50 years after Shostakovich's — that is, this year — Hannes Minnaar alternates their works, revealing both similarities and differences in a fascinating recital.
