Baroque expert Leonardo García‐Alarcón will immerse himself in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's esteemed Passion tradition as he conducts Bach’s St Matthew Passion. This performance will feature vocal elements from the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Netherlands Children’s Choir, and renowned soloists.

Bach's St Matthew Passion
On 11 April 1727, Bach's St Matthew Passion was initially performed, marking its 300‐year anniversary. Revived in the nineteenth century, the Passion became a beloved piece in the Netherlands, aided by the Concertgebouw Orchestra's tradition. Johann Sebastian Bach perfectly captured the Passion story with a depth that resonates profoundly. Now, Leonardo García‐Alarcón shares his interpretation of this timeless masterpiece. The Baroque specialist made waves with his 2022 debut at the Concertgebouw Orchestra. This event marks his third collaboration with the orchestra.

Concertgebouw Orchestra
The Concertgebouw Orchestra's yearly Passion performance is one of the oldest concert traditions worldwide. Initiated in 1899 by chief conductor Willem Mengelberg, Bach's St Matthew Passion has been an annual highlight during Holy Week. Since 1975, the orchestra has alternated between performing the Passion according to St Matthew and Bach’s equally brilliant St John Passion.
