About the Event

Immerse yourself in the stunning architecture of Amsterdam's breathtaking De Waalse Kerk for the ultimate concert set to awake your understanding of music.

Chamber Choir PA'dam and De Waalse Kerk present some of Bach's most beautiful cantatas in the series “Bach on Friday.” Each concert will focus on one cantata, always showing Bach in a different light. You will also hear a work by a female composer at each concert. Start your weekend off right with perhaps the greatest composer who ever lived: Johann Sebastian Bach.

No Bach without Sweelinck
Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam for forty years and attracted musicians from all over Europe who saw him as a teacher and source of inspiration. Among them was the German composer Praetorius, who in turn influenced Bach. Both Bach and Sweelinck were loyal to “their church,” where they performed music year after year. Whereas with Bach the cantatas with singing and instruments were intended for the worship service, Sweelinck limited himself to organ music during the service. His choral works, on the contrary, sounded outside the church in living rooms of wealthy citizens and music lovers, at universities and in private circles. In this way they are both, each in their own way, part of a long tradition of composers, organists and church musicians.

About Bach on Friday
How did Johann Sebastian Bach influence composers centuries after him? And what did the works of other members of the Bach family sound like? Get to know Bach and gems by other composers better with chamber choir PA'dam and the Nicolaas Consort. In a carefully composed program by artistic director Maria van Nieukerken and organist Wim Dijkstra, you will not only have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful music, but you will also learn more about the composers themselves. With live musical examples and explanations by Gustavo Trujillo, the music comes to life!
