Apollo Ensemble — Das Lied von der Erde, G.Mahler
Amsterdam, De Waalse Kerk
About the Event
The meaning of life: its beauty, its mercilessness and also its finitude or eternity. Das Lied von der Erde is perhaps Mahler's most personal and important work. It is a cycle of six songs, for alto, tenor and orchestra.
Mahler composed this work for a large symphony orchestra. Arnold Schoenberg was obsessed with this work and began creating an arrangement in which he reduced the instrumental scoring to an ensemble of five winds, five strings, percussion, piano, celesta and harmonium. Rainer Riehn later completed this arrangement.
In these concerts, the Apollo Ensemble plays instruments from the first half of the 20th century, from the time of Schoenberg, which produces a milder timbre.
