Gotham Chamber Opera transforms one of the city's hottest nightspots into the court and banquet hall of the decadent Roman emperor, Heliogabalus: James Marvel directs this daring production of Cavalli's Eliogabalo at The Box, on Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Composed in 1668, Cavalli's opera tells the story of a man who even today remains infamous for his sexual appetites, his appointment of an all-female senate, and his death by assassination. The Gotham Chamber Opera brings the work to life in a contemporary context, where the entertainments preferred by the emperor will be interpreted by some of The Box’s alluring performers.
