About the Event

The Deutsche Oper Berlin presents Georges Bizet's 'Carmen', a work that shocked the audience as a scandal at its Paris Opéra Comique premiere in 1875 but is now among the most‐performed and best‐loved operas in the repertoire.

In his opera, Bizet created a female character that was the exact opposite of the passive suffering heroine of his time. Carmen represents the society where sex and violence are the only feelings possible between two people and love has lost its appeal. On the other side of this bleakness stands Don José, who is doomed to fail with his ideal of love.
