Mussorgsky's Czar Boris is a intelligent emperor and loving father, who has risen to power due to a smart marriage, sound leadership, but under the shadow of murder of a murder. The opera traces the ruler's demise, owing to his own bad conscience and the pressure of political processes beyond his control.
