Bach's Saint John Passion at Église Saint‐Louis‐en‐l'Île

About the Event

Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion, an oratorio, was composed during his first year as cantor of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. It was first performed there on Good Friday in 1724. This composition both relates to and comments on the Passion of Christ as described in the Gospel of John. Alongside Bach's St. Matthew Passion, it represents the culmination of a long‐standing tradition dating back to the Middle Ages of singing the Passion of Christ during Holy Week. Notably, it stands as one of the most magnificent and opulent works of its kind.
