Johannes Debus

Canadian Opera Company Music Director Johannes Debus recently conducted Aida and The Magic Flute with the company. He will also conduct Rigoletto, Love from Afar and The Tales of Hoffmann in the coming season. Mr. Debus obtained his musical education at Hamburg Conservatorium, before being engaged at Oper Frankfurt in 1998 as répétiteur and Kapellmeister. There he acquired an extensive repertoire ranging from works by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Wagner and Puccini, to Strauss, Berg, Britten and Henze. Mr. Debus made his Tanglewood Festival debut last summer, replacing James Levine, conducting The Abduction from the Seraglio with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Following his huge success with the orchestra, he was invited to replace Sir Colin Davis conducting works by Mozart and Haydn, marking his Symphony Hall debut. He recently conducted Hänsel und Gretel for Bayerische Staatsoper and Elektra at the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin. He returns to Berlin in 2012 for The Rake’s Progress. He can be seen in concert with performances in Antwerp and Berlin with the Nieuw Ensemble and the Real Filharmonia de Galicia.
