Arabella: Deutsche Oper Berlin

About the Event

Discover Richard Strauss's famous opera 'Arabella' in a new version by Tobias Kratzer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

At first glance, the libretto Arabella von Hofmannsthal is a comedy of errors. Through the music of Richard Strauss, who pulls out all the stops of his orchestral art, from the late romantic sound of noise to the most modern disharmonics, a subtle, colorful panorama emerges of a society in upheaval, whose late bourgeois values are crumbling. One's own identity and interpersonal relationships have to be tested anew.

For director Tobias Kratzer and his team, the ambivalences of the acting characters, right down to the last quirky supporting character, are a welcome source of inspiration for thinking about historical role models and modern identity. The detailed staging, in which the real play plot is repeatedly contrasted, supplemented and commented on with cinematic virtuality, is intended to give the viewer the opportunity to experience the musical richness with often surprising changes of perspective between private emotional chaos and social norm.
