Andris Nelsons & Boston Symphony Orchestra Perform Shostakovich at Carnegie Hall

About the Event

Explore the Russian tradition of the 20th and 21st Centuried, as Andris Nelsons conducts Shostakovich's epic 'Leningrad Symphony' and the New York premiere of a new work by Sofia Gubaidulina, commissioned by the ongoing 125 Commissions Project.

A living legend, Gubaidulina's music often uses unusual instrumentation. This new work promises to be no exception, with solo parts for Violin, Cello and the traditional Russian bayan. Sharing Gubaidulina's distaste for the constraints imposed by the Soviet system, Shostakovich nonetheless expressed a deep patriotism in his Seventh Symphony, condemning the Nazi invasion that lead to the Siege of Leningrad, and commemorating the half‐million victims of the siege in musical form.
