The Makropulos Affair: Finnish National Opera

About the Event

Enjoy this new production of Leoš Janáček's The Makropulos Affair at the Finnish National Opera this season with internationally renowned soprano Karita Mattila in the title role.

The story of Doctor Makropulos is an interesting and timeless story of the quest for perpetual youth at any price. Singer Emilia Marty has lived many lives since Doctor Makropulos gave her his elixir of eternal life. Three centuries have passed, and she needs a new dose — but can the recipe be found in time?

Leoš Janáček certainly discovered the recipe for eternal life for his operas: a fascinating story, music that rises naturally from speech and situation, memorable melodic moments and the secret ingredient — the ability to make the viewer empathise with the characters on stage.

The complex role of Emilia Marty became one of Karita Mattila's greatest triumphs at the premiere of this production in San Francisco. Makropulos is a co‐production with San Francisco Opera.
