Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah

About the Event

Experience Felix Mendelssohn‐Bartholdy's oratorio Elijah under the baton of Rolf Beck. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will be joined by soloists Johanna Winkel (soprano), Ning Liang (alto), Dominik Wortig (tenor), Thomas Bauer (baritone) and the Chorakademie Lübeck.

Saint Paul op. 36 (1836) and Elias op. 70 (1846) clearly show the way Mendelssohn strove to apply elements of drama to traditional oratorios and turn them into sacred operas by creating dramatic characters. Mendelssohn's notion of oratorio becoming a sacred opera greatly influenced the musical and dramatic content of his Elias with the action unfolding in dialogue, and in the alternation of levels and perspectives and in dramatic interaction.

Practical Information

As Asia’s oldest orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra brought Western classical music to China. Today, it remains a world‐class orchestra which attracts internationally renowned artists while it still retains its Chinese essence: the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is a beacon of culture and arts for the city of Shanghai.
