Dusapin's Penthesilea: La Monnaie
About the Event
Inspired by the eponymous tragedy by Kleist, Penthesilea is a complex and deadly game of love and hate between Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, and Achilles. Pascal Dusapin composes a modern score of tragic madness.
In Kleist's version of this myth, Achilles does not kill Penthesilea, but vice versa : In a moment of tragic despair she tears apart the one she loves with her teeth. In his seventh opera, Pascal Dusapin includes a quote from Christa Wolf: "Thus begins the modern era and it is not beautiful."
