Schumann's Masterpiece Genoveva

About the Event

The German MDR Orchestra and Leipzig Choir will perform Schumann's masterpiece "Genoveva", with great soloists including Anne Schwanewilms, in the De Doelen Concert Hall and Congress Centre, Rotterdam.

Schumann’s rediscovered "Genoveva" is clearly related to the operas of Richard Wagner. Its gripping tale tells of Count Siegfried, who embarks on a Crusade, leaving his wife Genoveva behind under the protection of his friend Golo. Golo attempts in vain to seduce Genoveva. Golo’s pride is wounded and — abetted by the sinister witch‐like figure Margaretha — he accuses her publicly of adultery. This news is brought to Siegfried, who orders his wife to be locked up and has her condemned to death. On his return, however, he is persuaded of his wife’s innocence and the two are reconciled.

De Doelen and Operadagen Rotterdam Festival present this unique production featuring the renowned German soprano Anne Schwanewilms in the title role. Belgian film director and writer Eric de Kuyper has created a new and much‐praised film that forms the decor for the performances together with other video images.
