Il Trovatore

About the Event

Giuseppe Verdi's moving opera "Il Trovatore" will be performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The opera belongs to the so‐called "popular trilogy", together with Rigoletto and La Traviata, which contributed so immensely to Verdi's fame. The libretto is by Salvatore Cammarano and based on the Romantic drama "El trovador" (1836) by Antonio García Gutiérrez.

The action is set in 15th century in Spain during the civil war (1413), in which Count James of Urgell opposed the pretender to the Catalan‐Aragonese crown, Ferdinand of Antequera of the House of Trastamara, who had been chosen as king under the Compromise of Caspe (1412). Manrico the troubadour, a supporter of the Count of Urgell, clashes with Conte di Luna, a member of the rival faction, for the love of Leonora, a lady of the court. Manrico has been brought up by a gypsy, Azucena, who claims to be his mother. The Conte di Luna imprisons both Azucena and Manrico and punishes him to death. Azucena takes revenge by revealing that Manrico was in fact Di Luna's own brother that she kidnapped when he was a child to avenge the death of her mother, who had been burnt at the stake as a witch. Leonora, having failed to save Manrico, poisons herself.
