Doña Francisquita

About the Event

Doña Francisquita is the best known of the Zarzuelas — the Spanish opera comique — by the Catalan composer Amadeu Vives.

Francisquita falls in love with the student Fernando. But Fernando himself is in love with the beautiful actress Aurora who is the lover of Lorenz Perez. This great confusion only ends when Fernando realises that his own father, Don Mathias, wants to marry Francisquita, and starts to fight for his newly awakened love for Francisquita.

The libretto was written in Spanish by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández Shaw, based on Lope de Vega's comedy La discreta enamorada. The first performance, at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid in 1923, was a tremendous success and the audience called for many pieces had to be repeated. The Barcelona premiere took place the same year at the Teatre Tívoli and aroused equal enthusiasm. Doña Francisquita was widely performed in Latin America, and the French and English versions have been staged all over Europe.
