ABOUT THE EVENT

Philippe Jordan conducts one of the great Strauss singers of our time, Renée Fleming, in the title role of "Arabella", in a new production by Marco Arturo Marelli.

Only twenty years have passed since the creation of Der Rosenkavalier, the first collaboration between Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss. But during these twenty years yesterday’s world has been swallowed up. The First World War has catapulted Europe into an era of fire and blood, the Habsburg dynasty has collapsed and Charles I has died in exile in Madeira. In a Vienna that he no longer recognises, Hofmannsthal dreams up the exquisite figure of Arabella; heroine of a Rosenkavalier after the fall. Hofmannsthal never reached the end and left the libretto incomplete. In homage to Hofmannsthal, Strauss set his every word to music, once more bringing to life a series of unforgettable characters: the fierce Mandryka, bringing the pure icy air of the forests to this decadent society, Zdenka, Arabella's sister, disguised as a boy by the family to avoid paying her dowry.

Over this world in ruins, Strauss's ineffable voices once more hover and revive one last time the charms of an ever more threatened Vienna. Created in 1933 in Dresden, this opera, born out of disillusion, never suspected that it would nevertheless be the last sign of a still happy world.
