The sixth opera in Händel's catalogue was the last one the Saxon composer premiered in Italy. Vincenzo Grimani's libretto is based on the ascent of Emperor Nero to the throne and puts the corruption of political power on the table. The score, fresh and uncluttered, is structured on the basis of arias and agile canzonette, and in keeping with the Venetian style and with an evident sense of humour in many of its musical numbers. The North American mezzo‐soprano Joyce DiDonato returns to the Liceu in a repertoire that forms part of her opera and concert programmes, alongside a cast of great names specialising in Baroque opera such as the bassist Luca Pisaroni and the Argentine countertenor Franco Fagioli. The Il Pomo d'Oro ensemble is the best ensemble to tackle one of the best Baroque operas of the early 18th century.
