Tommaso Traetta's opera is innovative while at the same time keeping elements from the tradition of the Italian opera.

Traetta composed his work for the court in St. Petersburg as court composer of Catherine II.

Antigone addresses the conflict between the children of Oedipus. Different from the legend, Traetta's opera promises a happy ending.
