The Threepenny Opera: Theater an der Wien

演出简介

Weill's music to Brecht's libretto uses classical music schemes as well as modern rhythms and forms of the time.

The Threepenny Opera satirizes the double standards of the bourgeoisie during capitalism. Weill himself called his opera "the most consistent reaction to Wagner."

Peachum is the head and at the same time exploiter of all beggars in London. The only one he cannot control is his daughter Polly who decides to marry her father's rival Macheath. Peachum and his wife plot to have Macheath arrested and sentenced to death.
During his weekly visit with a prostitute Macheath gets caught by the police. He is saved from the gallows at the very last minute by the queen who pardons him because it is the day of her coronation.
