The small Balkan state Pontevedro is nearly bankrupt. The only thing that could save it is the marriage between Duke Danilo and the rich widow Hanna Glawari. When the enchanter Camille de Rosillon appears and Hanna seems to show some interest to him, Danilo's jealousy awakes.
