Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky‐Korsakov (1844‐1908) is probably among the thirty best‐known works of classical music. Enthusiasts will also be familiar with other of his orchestral works (such as The Golden Cockerel suite, the Capriccio Espagnol, or the Russian Easter Festival Overture), and many will know that several operas became popular in his orchestration (like Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina).

His lieder, on the other hand, are less well‐known, and those aware of them will most likely have heard them on the records of great Russian singers. This event offers a great and rare opportunity to hear these miniature masterpieces at a live performance.

One of the singers, Armenia‐born Karine Babajanyan, studied with honours at the State Conservatory Yerevan. She made her debut at the Armenian National Opera, and sang in Koblenz in 1999. In 2001 she joined the Bielefeld Opera Company, and in 2003 the Stuttgart Opera. She has made guest appearances in Hungary on several occasions. She often sings lieder, as does Bernadett Wiedemann, soloist of the Hungarian State Opera, who in December 2013 gave a recital of the songs of Wagner and Liszt.
