Haydn's Creation: Stephansdom

演出简介

Joseph Haydn wrote his oratorio The Creation within two years and it was to become his most famous and most performed work! Enjoy this performance at Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral.

As if driven by a higher power, he composed this large‐scale work within two years. Completely exhausted, the 66 year‐old composer became seriously ill shortly after the premiere. Powerful and uplifting at the same time, Haydn depicts the act of creation and the praise of God is at the center. The public premiere took place in 1799 at the Bugtheater in Vienna and ended with enthusiastic shouts of "long live Papa Haydn! Long live music!". This laid the foundation for an enduring tradition to this day to perform The Creation throughout the world.

The St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is more than a fitting place for the performance of Haydn's most famous work. There is a close connection between Joseph Haydn and the cathedral — the Austrian composer sang in the cathedral as a choir boy for nine years and later in life married his wife Anna Mary Aloysia in the magnificent Stephansdom.
