Despite of the prestige of the Goldberg Variations, "The Well‐Tempered Clavier" would prove to be Bach's most influential work in the centuries following Bach's death. Divided into two books containing 24 preludes and 24 fugues which pass through each tone of the chromatic scale, "The Clavier" represents a unique historical monument: a unification of the composer's intellectual prowess and his technical mastery of the instrument. The sublime result is one of poetic sonority.
