These two scandal‐clad masterpieces couldn’t be more different in tone and character. They meet in this ballet double bill, and the results are guaranteed to cause sparks. Walking Mad, by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger, is both homage to Maurice Ravel’s legendary Boléro and a celebration of physical sensuality.
Ballet director Mario Schröder takes on a monolithic modern‐dance classic: Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography for the Ballets Russes was at least as scandalous as the music to which it was set. The earthly, nearly sexual movements, centered at the body’s core, overwhelmed the audience’s visual appetites.
