Ensemble Baroque de Limoges
The Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (EBL) was founded 1984 under conductor Jean‐Michel Hasler. From the start, the EBL aimed to become a reference in the performance of 17th‐ and 18th‐century music. In 1991 Christophe Coin was nominated as the new musical director. One year later work started on researching, publishing, distributing and performing of previously unpublished music. The first score brought to light was a baroque zarzuela by José de Nebra Viento es la dicha de Amor, followed by Graun's concertos for viola da gamba, Draghi's La Vita della Morte etc.
Since 1992 the EBL have been regular guests at major international events such as the Salzburg Mozartwoche, Leipzig Bachtage, Innsbruck Festwochen der Alten Musik, as well playing at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Bach festival in Milan, in Paris at the Cité de la Musique and Châtelet Theatre, as in many other venues throughout France. 1995 Christophe Coin and EBL won the first prize at France's Music Awards Competition, Victoires de la Musique Classique, in the category of best instrumental ensemble, for their recording of all Bach's cello piccolo Cantatas.
Since 1992, too, playing techniques on early music instruments have been the subject of several international symposia organised by the EBL. In 2000 the ensemble was classed as an organisation for applied research by the French Ministry of Culture, opening up an increasing number of partnerships with national and international bodies and the establishment of a working convention with the Musée de la Musique / Cité de la Musique (Paris) and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Since 2001 musicians from the Ensemble have been actively involved in providing specialised training in Baroque music for teachers at music schools and conservatories on a national level.
The EBL so far has given over 1000 concerts in France, more than 200 concerts abroad, offered 20 seasons of music to its local audience in Limoges, relying on a solid base of 500 regular subscribers. The next twenty years are filled with the promises of expanding its work in partnership: record, train and broaden its audience, publish the result of research, and keep going in Limousin.
